Tile Trends in 2017

Posted on: May 12th, 2017

If you’ve been into any newly renovated or constructed building, chances are good that you’ve come across some unique and new tiles.

The market for diversification and customization of a home or business with individualized spaces via the use of colored, textured, or shaped tiles has grown exponentially in the past 2-3 years.

Shapes, Shapes, Shapes

No longer are homeowners relegated to square and rectangle tile in basic colors. Now, the endless array of shapes includes octagon, hexagon, ogee, star + cross, diamond, and waves. The illusion created by a full wall or backsplash of these unusual shapes can add depth and thematic flair.

Many current implementations of tile shapes can lend towards a Moroccan, 3-dimensional, or fish scale patterns, to cite a few. The whimsy and playfulness in these designs can be employed in a full room or a small focused space, like a powder room or bar area.

Uneven Surface Textures and Patterns

In both glossy and flat surface finishes, a handmade feel and more bespoke look are created when the tiles appear as if made one at a time by some artisan half a world away. While this may be the case in some instances like pearlescent Zellige tiles from Morroco or hand-painted terra cotta tiles from Tabarka, there are many mass producers of tile that are intentionally allowing variation in the surface textures to create a more unique end product.

Mixed Materials

Merging materials to create a layered look is another trend taking shape in the world of tile. Marble with bronze, multiple types of wood, wood with bronze, and stone, glass, shell mosaics are all being seen in increasing frequency as home and business owners branch out from the traditional veins of tile.

Metallics

With rose gold, bronze, and brass being all the rage in home interiors since 2016 and showing no signs of slowing, it’s only natural to start seeing it in the hard finishes of a home. Many manufacturers have honed in on the trend for metallic and now produce all ranges of tile- matte to shiny, full surface to accents, and decorative to durable.

Old School Trends

The typical 1950s and 1960s bathroom was outfitted with square or octagon small tile flooring and colored, square subway tile walls. The resurgence and take-aways from this retro trend has resulted in more construction friendly 12” x 12” mesh with octagon and dot or hexagon patterned flooring tile, with no end to the variations and individuality available. Rectangular subway tile, in standard white and nearly every color and texture in the Pantone scale, is also holding steady in popularity for bathrooms and backsplashes.

Rustic

Terra Cotta and Mexican Tile have stood the test of time. They are considered high value and highly durable products lending to longevity of product and design. New versions that take the durability and add stylized surface treatments and hand painting make for an Old World feel with a very new and fashion-oriented product.
